Ozone Therapy at Our Practice

Ozone Therapy and Modern Dental Care in Golden, Colorado

Ozone therapy is one of the tools Dr. Richard reaches for at Dentistry at Golden Ridge when a procedure calls for it, not a treatment on its own. It runs on our own ozone generator, set up chairside and used as an adjunct alongside conventional care, never in place of it.

Where we actually use it

In practice, ozone shows up in a handful of specific moments during your visit rather than as a standalone appointment. During a cleaning, it can be applied into periodontal pockets alongside scaling to help reduce the bacterial load in gum disease. See our periodontal care page for how we treat it. During a filling, it can be applied to a cavity before it's restored. After a tooth extraction or other minor procedure, it can be used on the site to support a cleaner healing environment. In each case, it's a few extra minutes added to a procedure you're already having, not a separate visit.

What it is

Ozone is an energized form of oxygen, three oxygen atoms instead of the two we breathe, delivered as a gas, in ozonated water, or in ozonated oil depending on where it's being used. It has a long history of use in medicine and dentistry, though it's important to be direct about what that history does and does not establish.

What we can honestly say about it

We offer it as an adjunctive, complementary option, not a replacement for standard treatment and not a cure for anything. Some research is encouraging, for instance on reducing bacterial counts at a treatment site. In other areas the evidence is early or mixed, so we don't promise outcomes that ozone alone can't guarantee. Ozone therapy is not FDA-cleared for any dental use, and no ozone device holds that clearance.

Within that framing, here's what it's generally used for: helping reduce harmful bacteria at an infection site as a complement to standard treatment; supporting a cleaner environment around an area of early decay before it's restored; and, in gum disease, reducing bacterial load in periodontal pockets alongside scaling and root planing, not instead of it.

Who it isn't right for

Ozone therapy isn't appropriate for everyone. Tell us before treatment if you have a bleeding or clotting disorder, G6PD deficiency, uncontrolled hyperthyroidism, or if you're pregnant, and we'll plan your care without it.

Part of the bigger picture

Dr. Richard practices functional dentistry, looking at what's happening in your mouth as connected to your health more broadly, not treated in isolation. Reducing the bacterial and inflammatory load of an infection or gum disease is one small piece of that. It's a philosophy of care, not a specialty or a claim that any one treatment reaches beyond the mouth, and we wouldn't want you to read it as either.

Questions about whether ozone therapy fits your treatment plan are best answered at an appointment, where Dr. Richard can look at what's actually going on. Call (303) 395-3333 to schedule.

Dental Ozone Therapy FAQs

What is ozone therapy in dentistry?

Ozone is an energized form of oxygen, three oxygen atoms instead of the two we breathe. In our office it is delivered as a gas, in ozonated water, or in ozonated oil, in small amounts at a specific site. Dr. Richard uses it as an add-on to a procedure you are already having, not as a separate treatment.

Is ozone therapy FDA-cleared?

No. Ozone therapy is not FDA-cleared for any dental use, and no ozone device holds that clearance. That is why we describe it as an adjunctive, complementary option, not a cure for anything and not a replacement for standard treatment.

Does ozone replace fillings, cleanings, or gum treatment?

No. It is used alongside standard care, never in place of it. A filling is still a filling, and gum disease is still treated with scaling and root planing, as described on our periodontal care page. Ozone is a small extra step within those procedures.

Is ozone therapy proven?

Some research is encouraging, for instance on reducing bacterial counts at a treatment site. Other areas are early or mixed, and ozone therapy is not a standard of care. Dr. Richard is glad to talk through the current evidence at your visit so you can decide what is right for you.

Who should not have ozone therapy?

It is not appropriate for everyone. Tell us before treatment if you have a bleeding or clotting disorder, G6PD deficiency, or uncontrolled hyperthyroidism, or if you are pregnant, and we will plan your care without it. Dr. Richard reviews your health history first and explains what to expect before using it.

Do you offer ozone therapy in Golden, CO?

Yes, as an adjunct during some procedures, when Dr. Richard feels it fits your care. Questions about whether it fits your treatment plan are best answered at an appointment. Call (303) 395-3333 to schedule.
